Vaison-la-Romaine

Yesterday, after driving up Mont Ventoux, we headed to nearby Vaison-la-Romaine.  The town has a population of about 6000, which is how many people lived there during the peak of Roman culture.  Their Roman theater seats 6000.

The town has lots of interesting antiquities: two excavated Roman sites in the lower part of town, a still functioning 2000-yr-old Roman bridge (which we drove across), and a medieval hilltop city.

The Roman bridge.  The base withstood flooding in 1992 that removed the modern upper structure.
