Vincent

We are living among the historical footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh.  His presence is visible all over town.  But the Foundation Vincent Van Gogh is the only place in Arles that you can see original paintings by Van Gogh.  The Foundation doesn't own any, but each year puts on shows featuring loaned pieces.

Yesterday we went to view their current show.  It featured 8 Van Gogh paintings, six of which came from the collection of a Swiss industrialist.  Also featured were more than 70 works by the American painter Alice Neel (1900 - 1984). We were unfamiliar with her work.  It's a little embarrassing that we have to come to France to discover American art.

At any rate, I'm posting photos of my three favorite pieces in the current Van Gogh show.

Blossoming chestnut branches

Olive orchard

The weeders
These three pieces were painted in 1889 and 1890.
