Sand divers

As you might guess, sand divers are frequently encountered on sand.  Sometimes they are partially buried in the sand.  Often they are posed, ready to take off in an instant, to catch some unsuspecting prey.  Sand divers belong to the lizardfish family.  They are quite patient, and can usually be approached for a photo, although sometimes they take off after a flash.

The fish in the photos below ranged from 10 to 12 inches long.  The photos were taken at depths from 15 to 40 feet.
