Swimming with Palometas

This morning, we were lucky enough to encounter a school of about 60 palometas in less than 15 feet of water, over sand.  They didn't seem to mind us, and milled around for quite a while.  Palometas belong in the jack family.  They grow up to about 18 inches.  The fish in today's school were about 12 inches long.

We occasionally see small groups of palometas (4 to 6), but this was the largest school that we have ever seen.  The fish has a striking appearance due to its extremely long fins that are bordered in black.
