Art

Art is everywhere in Paris, but this morning, we visited a museum we had previously only seen from afar: Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.  It is a beautiful building with a lovely collection.  One room consists of a 60-meter curved fresco by Raoul Dufy entitled La Fee Electricite (The Spirit of Electricity).  This piece was commissioned in 1936 for the International Exposition in 1937.  He was tasked to highlight the role of electricity in national life and in particular to show the leading social role played by electric light.

The piece is stunning in terms of its size, color, and composition.  The fresco was composed of 250 plywood panels, each 2 meters high and 1.2 meters wide.

These photos started at the far left of the painting and follow it around to the right.  However, based on the costumes depicted, the history of electricity progresses from the right to the left.

Throughout the museum, garments designed by Yves Saint Laurent that were inspired by various artists are displayed.  Two of these garments can be seen in the above photos.
