This morning, we drove to Le Grau du Roi, rented bikes and rode from a fairly modern town on the coast to the ancient walled city of Aigues Mortes. This is one of our favorite bike rides because most of it is on dedicated bike paths.

The Mediterranean |
To begin, we rode along the promenade at the seashore, then headed north along a canal path. The canal cuts between salt ponds and estuarine waters that host lots of great birds, including flamingoes, terns, egrets, herons, and black-headed gulls.

We stopped in the main place (square) in Aigues Mortes for some cafe and Perrier. Then rode around the walled city before heading back.

We ate lunch in Le Grau du Roi, then returned the bikes and headed home.
|
Le Grau du Roi is a commercial fishing port. These seagulls were hoping for a free lunch. |

You never know what you might discover on the beach. But a hippo? |
Great day trip!
