I'm not sure where the name scad came from, but often when we encounter scad we encounter sizable numbers of them. This morning, we dove with a tightly bunched school of bigeye scad. These fish were 7 or 8 inches long. They swam in a tight ball as if a predator was chasing them, even when no predators were around. Scad belong to the jack family
The photos were taken at a depth of about 50 feet, and the school size was at least a couple hundred fish. They looked almost as tightly packed as sardines in a can (but much bigger.) Nice scene!
