The long, black-bordered fins of palometa make this fish easy to recognize from a distance. Palometa belong to the jack family. They often school over sand, in shallow water. They are fairly common in the southern Caribbean. As I was watching these three fish today, one of them swam to the bottom to scrape its side against the sand. That's one way to deal with an irritant.
Although this fish can reach lengths up to 18 inches, the fish in these photos were closer to 10 inches. The photos were taken at a depth of about 20 feet.
