Perched high on a rocky outcropping above the valley floor, Les Baux-de-Provence served as an important military site for hundreds of years. While much of the fortress is in ruins, the site evokes medieval life and battle tactics.

To avoid crowds, and snag a parking spot high on the hill, we arrived just before the site opened. By the time we returned to the car, the little parking lot was about 1/3 full of rainbow-hued, old Citroens.
