Following Vincent

Today, we decided to track down two sites in Arles where Vincent Van Gogh had painted during his productive stay in 1888.

The first site, is a reconstruction of the bridge that he painted.  Unfortunately, the site (named Pont Van Gogh = Van Gogh bridge) is usually only marked on local maps with an arrow, where the map ends or turns into a legend.  So, following the directions shown on 2 different maps, we got close.  We were on the gravel road next to the canal, and could see the bridge ahead of us, but the road was interrupted by boulders that blocked passage.  Eventually, by back tracking, and using GPS, we found our way to a paved road that led to the bridge.

The second site, Les Alyscamps, is a necropolis with 2 lovely lines of trees behind many sarcophagi.  From Roman times through the Middle ages this site was one of the most famous cemeteries in the Western world.  The church is Eglise Saint-Honorat, rebuilt in the 12th century.  This is a very peaceful site.
