Spotted drum

Over the years, we have had the pleasure of encountering a wide variety of developmental stages of spotted drum.  This year, the number of juveniles seems to be reduced compared with other years, and we have only rarely encountered the smallest juveniles.  I found one yesterday.  It was about a half inch in length, and swam continuously back and forth in a secluded pocket in the reef.  Because it was so small, and moving continuously, I needed to take about 5 photos to get one with the little fish in focus.  Today I found an adult for a comparison.  This species grows to 10 or 11 inches.  The adult was about 7 inches long.

This juvenile is facing to the left.

This adult is oriented the same way as the juvenile.
This species comes out in the open to feed at night, and hangs out under shelter by day.
