Antiquity

This morning, we headed to the Musee Departemental Arles Antique.  This very modern museum building houses a large selection of mostly Roman artifacts.  Many of the prized artifacts were found at the bottom of the Rhone River, which passes just behind the museum.

Recent explorations of the Rhone located a fully laden Roman barge in 2004, and uncovered a magnificent bust of Julius Caesar in 2007.  Having both been submerged for nearly 2000 years, they were both on display.  The wooden barge has been carefully restored through a complex set of steps to stop the wood and iron from deteriorating once it was brought out of the river.
