I have been looking at lions sculpted on various structures in Arles for quite a while. Today, I found part of the reason for the lions everywhere. The motto of Arles (in Latin) begins "Ab ira leonis". This translates to "Freed from the rage of the lion." The motto continues "the city of Arles will be an army and a sword to its enemies."
All of the lion images from today were on buildings in the Place de la Republique. And two of the sculptures contained "Ab ira leonis."
