As August winds down, the seasons are clearly changing. Geese are starting to fly south, and many other bird species seem to be in a feeding frenzy trying to bulk up before they move on.
For a couple of weeks, we have been entertained by a small band of cedar waxwings as they feed in the tops of our pine and spruce trees. We have seen them hovering and doing all kinds of unexpected things as they pursue flying insects.
On the beach today, I found a juvenile murre. Normally, the chicks are still feeding with one parent around this time. This one had lost its parent and isn't likely to survive.
Our local bird populations seem to have changed over the years. We are still happy to see them in our yard and on our beach.
On the other hand, I wasn't happy to see a rabbit that showed up this morning right next to my garden box full of salad greens.
Be well.
