Their scrawled markings make them look a little out of focus. They have a couple of different color phases, and can darken or lighten dramatically. They are quite thin, and occasionally we see them swimming like flounders, close to the bottom. These fish were about 14 inches long. Photos were taken at about 20 feet deep.

Scrawled filefish
We frequently encounter scrawled filefish on our dives. But they are hard to photograph, and they swim away. They are interesting looking fish. Their file is the elongated spine in the first dorsal fin -- visible in the photo below.
